Leadership for Human Flourishing
What kind of leader do you want to be?
The Baylor Leadership Studies Minor is for students from any major who want to lead with purpose. Our motto — Leadership for Human Flourishing — reflects our belief that leadership is not just a title or a way of wielding power.
Leadership is a moral activity aimed at meaningful purposes. It’s about cultivating order out of chaos, fostering environments where people can thrive, and knowing not only how to lead, but why you lead.
Why Leadership Matters
Your leadership reflects your vision of what it means to be human. Through the Leadership Studies Minor, you’ll see how the practice of leadership is inseparable from questions of character, calling, and community. As one early scholar put it:
“Leadership is a great human problem—a study of human nature… once you can win the hearts, and the respect, of those who work for you, the greatest achievements become possible.” — Montgomery (1961)
Leadership matters because it is part of what it means to be human.
What You’ll Gain
Our program functions like a supplemental core curriculum, helping you bring coherence to your whole college experience. You’ll graduate not just with leadership skills, but with a vision for how your leadership can serve the common good.
- Clarify your calling – Discern where and how you are meant to lead and connect your leadership to a vision of human flourishing.
- Cultivate virtuous character – Develop the virtues needed to lead well in your career, relationships, and community.
- Engage leadership for the common good – Lead in ways that contribute to the thriving of others, not just your own success.
Along the way, you’ll also gain:
- Communication mastery – Speak and write with clarity and persuasion
- Ethical decision-making skills – Navigate complex challenges with integrity
- Collaboration know-how – Work effectively in teams
- A strong portfolio – Stand out for jobs, grad school, or service opportunities with tangible leadership experience
Grounded in Christian Convictions
We believe calling comes from God, who invites us to “put on the new self” (Col. 3:10), imaging Christ as He perfectly imaged God. Our approach to leadership is shaped by a biblical vision of human flourishing, which guides our understanding of the common good.
